LEA Course Management

Introduction

Approved courses are initially defined by the State of North Carolina. Within each course record, the State defines the five-character course code, start date, and long description. The fields should not be changed by an LEA.

The State-approved courses are five characters in length. The first two characters are the discipline, the second two are the specific course within the discipline, and the fifth represents both the school type and academic level. A document with NC WISE standard course codes and descriptions is available (see the More section on Page 11 of this lesson).

Each year, the State of North Carolina updates the document Outline of the Course Coding Structure for NC Public Schools and distributes this information to schools.

LEAs create a master list of courses from which district schools select their courses. This lesson describes the two options LEAs have when creating the master course list.

Objectives

At the completion of this lesson, you will be able to explain the two options for creating courses at the LEA level.
